The BBC are reportedly keen on appointing former England manager Gareth Southgate to a pundit role on Match of the Day.
Gary Lineker, who hosted the programme and was widely critical of England’s Euro 2016 campaign, hopes the duo will boost viewership.
“There’s bound to be some friction when these two are in the same studio,” the BBC source said. “The weekly showdown between the two heroes of England’s football will be unmissable.” Lineker

in the final led to Southgate’s resignation and Lineker insists his criticism was not what prompted the 53-year-old to step down.
However, there could be a battle for Southgate with ITV also keen on him with their pundit Gary Neville set to return to Sky.
However, Match of the Day are keen to bring Southgate on board as they celebrate their 60th anniversary.
Executives think Southgate would be the perfect replacement for Ian Wright, who left the programme at the end of last season.
Wright was partly to blame for the four-and-a-half-hour commut from London to the Salford studios, with
Southgate set to travel 90 minutes from his home in Harrogate to Salford.
